Bruschetta with Cherry Tomatoes and Mozzarella in a Meadow

My Favorite Tomato Sandwich Recipes
It’s true that my taste for different types of foods has changed and matured as I’ve grown older but my love for a good tomato sandwich has never faltered. If you love tomato sandwiches as much as I do why not try one of my favorite sandwich recipes today!

Although sliced tomatoes form the base of each of the following sandwich recipes, the added ingredients give each one a unique, taste-tempting flavor.

Tomatoes on Toast

As a kid, I couldn’t get enough of these. Today I still enjoy them.

The simple recipe for tomatoes on toast is exactly what it says. I make mine using lightly toasted white bread, several tomato slices and a good heap of Miracle Whip brand salad dressing. If you are a mayonnaise lover, that will do nicely as well. That’s it! Simple, yet scrumptious. What more could you want?

The Dagwood Sandwich

Although they are more commonly known as Club Sandwiches, my Grannie always called these taste treats, Dagwood Sandwiches, after Blondie’s husband in the old Blondie cartoons. Dagwood was frequently seen eating sandwiches so huge they looked like they might topple over before he could get them into his mouth. I enjoyed these tomato sandwiches immensely during my middle school years and can still be found building one as a midnight snack.

To make a proper Dagwood Sandwich, you’ll need:

3 slices of lightly toasted bread
Sliced deli Ham
Sliced Tomatoes
Several whole Lettuce leaves
Miracle Whip brand salad dressing (or mayonnaise)

Directions:

Spread mayo on the first slice of toast.
Top with tomatoes, lettuce and sliced ham.
Top that with another slice of toast.
Spread mayo, add another layer of tomatoes, lettuce ans sliced ham.
Complete your sandwich with the third slice of toast.

Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich

I spent the better portion of my teen years sitting at the luncheon counter in Woolworth’s discussing boys and devouring Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwiches. They were cheap and delicious. In my opinion, they still are!

Ingredients:

Again for this one the name says it all!

Directions:

Take several slices of crispy bacon, a couple slices of fresh tomato and some fresh lettuce leaves. Pile all of those ingredients in between 2 slices of toast.
Add a dab of mayonnaise (or Miracle Whip brand salad dressing) and you’re done!

Italian Style Tomato Sandwiches

For me, these were love at first bite. Using Olive oil and Italian herbs and spices as condiments in your tomato sandwiches adds a deep, rich flavor that can’t be beat. My husband and I frequently enjoy these satisfying Italian style tomato sandwiches for dinner.

Ingredients:

One loaf of fresh crusty Italian bread, sliced lengthwise.
2 medium sized tomatoes, sliced thin
5 or 6 slices of fresh mozzarella cheese
About a half pound of prosciutto, capicola or Genoa salami (optional or leave out completely)
Olive oil for drizzling
A sprinkling of, fresh or dried, basil and oregano
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

On the bottom half of your Italian bread, make a single layer of mozzarella cheese.
Top that with a single layer of your choice of meat, if you are including it.
Top that with a single row of fresh tomato slices.
Sprinkle with herbs and spices.
Drizzle with Olive oil.
To finish, replace the top of the Italian bread.
Slice in half to make 2 large hero sandwiches.

This recipe is also nice when sliced into smaller sections and used as an appetizer or as finger sandwiches for a luncheon.
